By the time Stoneham resident Keri Verity came to the Hallmark Health System Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine she was at her wits end. The 41-year-old mom had been living in excruciating pain for two years, could barely walk and was no longer able to do the things she loved – exercise and ride her Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
An MRI found that Verity had bone spurs and degeneration in her left hip and her orthopedic surgeon recommended she undergo surgery. She had a total hip replacement at Hallmark Health System’s Melrose-Wakefield Hospital in July of 2012 and followed that up with both inpatient and outpatient physical therapy.
While some suggested she go to a Boston hospital, Verity is 100 percent confident she received the same level of care, if not better, at Hallmark Health System. In addition to taking great care of her, the Center’s staff also went above and beyond to accommodate Verity’s son who was on summer vacation at the time. The staff brought him lunch every day and brought in playing cards to help keep him occupied while he visited.
“Once I found the Center that was it, I was sold” said Verity. “I had no doubts whatsoever. I got exceptional care and was able to stay close to home.”
The difficult times are behind Verity now. She is back to doing the things she loves and credits the orthopedic surgeon, nurses and physical therapists at Hallmark Health System for getting her to this point.
“I couldn’t do anything before the surgery without being in pain and I look back and think ‘how did I live like that,’” Verity said. “Hallmark Health System gave me my life back.”

The Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine offers many services that are unique to our area. Our program is designed with our patients and their families in mind. You will attend Joint Camp where you will meet members of your healthcare team.
We will coordinate with nursing and anesthesia to get you better prepared for surgery. We provide the most up-to-date anesthesia techniques available by our highly trained anesthesia department. There are multiple options that involve combinations of both general anesthesia (the patient is completely asleep) and regional anesthesia (which involves injecting the nerves that supply pain to the surgical area to provide pain relief.) The anesthesiologists will decide with you and your surgeon what is the best possible option for you. We provide the latest in pain management techniques in order to put you in control of your discomfort.
We have specially trained nurses who will care for you after surgery. We have nationally certified post anesthesia nurses who will monitor you post operatively. We also provide room service type meals where you can call and order what you want, when you want, as long as it is within your dietary plan.
The Rehabilitation Services team works directly with the Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine from joint camp to the inpatient stay through home care and outpatient services. The physical therapy and occupational therapy team is comprised of highly trained, dedicated staff to help you get back into action.
We are monitoring National Clinical Databases to insure that we are providing top quality care as measured across the country. We are already well above the national average in reducing infection rates. We are constantly monitoring the procedures we have in place in order to maintain our good standing with national accreditation.
We are constantly striving to keep our communities informed with the most up-to-date medical information available and have many community programs set up on an ongoing basis.
