Hallmark Health System Collaborates with Novo Nordisk for Changing Diabetes Day

Feb. 22, 2013 – Hallmark Health System (HHS), which includes Lawrence Memorial Hospital of Medford and Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, is collaborating with Novo Nordisk, a world leader in diabetes care management, to host Changing Diabetes Day on Saturday, March 2 at Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is free and open to the public. No registration is necessary.

Changing Diabetes Day offers a variety of information sessions and activities centered on diabetes and pre-diabetes. Free health screenings, which will be provided by HHS physicians and medical professionals, will include blood pressure, non-fasting blood glucose, BMI, depression screenings and more. An HHS endocrinologist will also be on site to discuss diabetes care and management, in addition to certified diabetes educators, nutritionists, and fitness experts.

According to a recent study commissioned by Novo Nordisk and conducted by the Institute for Alternative Futures (IAF), a nonprofit research and educational organization, there were 557,200 people in Massachusetts with diabetes in 2010. Some 207,000 of them were undiagnosed and possibly beginning to suffer from the common complications of diabetes, including eye, kidney, lower extremity, and heart damage. Another 1,693,600 people had pre-diabetes, a condition in which the blood sugar level is higher than normal but not yet in the range for diabetes. If they do not take action, individuals with pre-diabetes can often progress to diabetes within 10 years.

HHS is affiliated with the Joslin Diabetes Center, the world's preeminent diabetes research and clinical care organization. The Center offers the latest advances for treating diabetes and its complications as well as patient education and support services. HHS is one of 40 national and two international Affiliate locations and the only Joslin Affiliate in Boston's northern suburbs. The Joslin Affiliate at HHS is here to help you manage your diabetes.
