While music may soothe the savage beast, Lawrence Memorial Hospital is giving the old adage a new, high-tech twist.

Nurses at the Hallmark Health facility are conducting a study to see if music has any effects on patients waiting for procedures in the endoscopy unit. On Nov. 1, nurses Judy Moffatt and Donna Begin, clinical leader of endoscopy and recovery, started taking a sampling of patients to see if music should become a routine part of the unit's care.

Team Medford, a group of employees from Lawrence Memorial Hospital and Hallmark Health, took up a collection - but not for money. For school supplies.

The North Suburban Family Network is celebrating 10 years of building stronger families in Stoneham and surrounding communities.

Established by Hallmark Health, NSFN provides free family education and support for caregivers of young children from the ages of pre-natal to 47 months. The network extends its services to residents of Stoneham, Melrose and Wakefield, providing families in those areas with a variety of parent/child playgroups, educational workshops and support groups.

We've all heard the old nursery rhyme about the butcher, the baker, and the candlestick maker.

Well, before becoming a nurse, Melissa Mattola-Kiatos was a third of the way through that lineup - as well as a few others.

In addition to her post as a junior butcher at Elm Street Market in her hometown of Everett, she once supervised a four-star restaurant at Faneuil Hall; performed hand rubs as a salesgirl at Donna Karan; and managed mutual funds for two investment companies.

Finally, four years ago, the Saugus 33-year-old decided to give nursing a go.
