Hallmark Health leads the way in palliative care

Oct. 1, 2010- A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) found that lung cancer patients who received palliative care in addition to their usual aggressive management reported less depression, pain and other symptoms, compared with patients who received just aggressive care. What’s more, the study also showed that those who received palliative care actually lived longer, on average, and enjoyed a higher quality of life.

At Hallmark Health System, which includes Lawrence Memorial Hospital of Medford and Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, members of the Palliative Care Consultation Service seek to alleviate pain and discomfort to improve the quality of life of patients dealing with life-limiting, though not necessarily end-stage, illness.
