Lawrence Memorial Hospital and Melrose-Wakefield Hospital provides a full continuum of care for treating adults and geriatrics with acute psychiatric diagnoses that require an inpatient stay, including: major depression, bipolar illness, schizophrenia, personality disorders, psychotic episodes related to dementia and delirium, pain anxiety/disorders, substance abuse, and sleep disorders of the elderly. Our goal is to provide diverse, individualized, and effective treatments in a healthy, safe, and secure environment to maximize patient satisfaction and outcomes. In addition to focusing on the needs of our patients, we also encourage collaboration between our multidisciplinary treatment teams, patients, and their families to promote healing and independence.
Our inpatient unit provides treatment for all psychiatric diagnoses, including affective disorders, psychotic disorders, personality disorders, and schizophrenia. We also provide services to individuals who are dually diagnosed with a psychiatric and a substance abuse disorder. Patients benefit from high-quality psychiatric care combined with education, therapy groups, occupational therapy activity, re-socialization, rehabilitation, and an emphasis on individual patient responsibility and verbal expression of thoughts and feelings. Services include:
- Diagnostic evaluations
- Medication education, evaluation and management
- Individual, family, couples, and group therapy
- Psycho educational treatment
- Cognitive/behavioral therapy
- Crisis stabilization
- ECT
Through a careful balance of structure and respect, our inpatient program helps patients attain an optimal level of functioning and move into a less restrictive level of care as quickly as clinically possible. We involve our patients and their families in the development of the individualized treatment plans and maintain communication daily about treatment progress and discharge plans.
We use a multidisciplinary team, consisting of a psychiatrist, nurse, social worker/case coordinator, activities therapist, occupational therapist, and counselor, to assess and manage ongoing treatments. Patients will receive an individual evaluation covering all facets of their mental well being, medical history, physical health, and treatment goals, and will receive a treatment plan within 24 hours of admission. In addition to the tailored counseling and medication a patient may receive, he/she will also receive education based on his/her needs, such as stress management, crisis planning, relapse prevention, or patient safety.
