Life as an employee of Hallmark Health

As cliché as it sounds, Hallmark Health is a family. Our focus is simple: we care for our patients to the best of our ability, and this focus is one that attracts a very giving group of staff.

tptw_logo_vertThrough bone marrow drives and blood drives and even "paid time off" donations to our colleagues, people show their concern for their co-workers. Through our Community Teams, we have built strong connections with the population that we serve, including the students, elderly and underprivileged. And through our Employee Giving program, our employee community even gives back to our own non-profit organization. Our buildings are also filled with wonderful volunteers that support the important work that we do. It is pride in our mission that motivates us all.

Each year we honor the volunteers and the employees who reach milestones in their service to Hallmark Health and it is always very2011-bbjbestplaces.logo rewarding to honor the folks who have been here a long time. Nothing says more about a strong culture than this kind of longevity and devotion.

Caring for people who are ill is stressful though, and often sad, so together we have tried to build an environment where we can show our team spirit in ways that make the workplace fun.

Team of the Month

Women's Collaborative

According to Carol Downes, patient care director for maternal-newborn Services, a multidisciplinary group of managers and program directors came together in 2006 to look at services available at Hallmark Health System (HHS) for women. Over the years, representatives from inpatient and outpatient service lines that provide care and/or support for women have been at the table. They have coordinated and promoted the comprehensive healthcare services and educational resources available for women at HHS.

Team meetings provide an opportunity for better communication between departments regarding programs and event planning. These discussions have proven to reduce the duplicity of events in regards to target population and dates. Turn out is better when HHS events do not compete with one another.

One of the accomplishments of which we are proudest of is the annual HHS Women’s Golf Tournament. The funds raised at the two tournaments to date have allowed us the opportunity to sponsor three grants. The programs made possible through funding have focused on pregnant women in substance abuse treatment, strategies for coping with the effects of aging and rape prevention.

Employee of the Month

Jessica Bertram, Physical Therapist, Certified Lymphedema Therapist, Hallmark Health System Hematology and Oncology Center.

Jessica has helped initiate and build the new Lymphedema Therapy service for Hallmark Health  System. Promoting this new service, Jessica has attended a number of physician meetings to engage them in the new program. The physicians respect her and have provided positive feedback on her discussions. Always looking for new ways to grow this service, Jessica will take an idea and figure out how she can act on it.

Jessica brings a high level of skill to the physical therapy department. She is certified in womens  health and lymphedema. Because she independently manages her schedule, she can alternate  between inpatient and outpatient service locations at a moments notice. She will condense her  outpatient appointments to offer help to other areas while still accommodating each and every patient.

Jessica has helped train a number of students and new graduates. She is always willing to offer support to anyone who needs it regardless of their department. Going above and beyond, she will also help a patient figure out insurance options and other financial support programs. Jessica has received many compliments and thank you letters from her patients.programs. Jessica has received  many compliments and thank you letters from her patients.

Jane Clark, Senior Medical Technician, Lab Services, Melrose-Wakefield Hospital

Over the years, Jane has taken the time to recognize her fellow employees (from both labs) by creating a pamphlet highlighting each of her peers receiving an award at the annual dinner.

Geneva Garrison, Pharmacy Technician, Pharmacy, Melrose-Wakefield Hospital

Geneva stayed beyond her shift to assist in orders for her patients. This enabled the referring physician to verify the orders and provide the medications to the patients in a timely manner.

Abdalla Jamaleddine, IT System Coordinator, IT, Melrose-Wakefield Hospital

Two visitors who spoke Arabic came to one of Abadalla’s co-workers offices. This coworker could not explain the process for obtaining medical records to these visitors. Then, the co-worker found out that Abdalla spoke Arabic and called him and he immediately came over and helped explain the process.Abdalla was so helpful and truly able to help these visitors.

Amanda Kaelblein, Referral Coordinator, Managed Care, Unicorn Park

During a power outage at Unicorn Park, the phones went down and we were left with over 50 voicemails requesting referrals. On top of her own job, Amanda helped by listening and processing a lot of those referrals. Amanda has been a great help to our department since day one. Another example is when Amanda helps other representatives by going through our referral bucket in EMR, which is urgent referral requests sent by physician’s offices and she helps process referrals not assigned to her, on top of her own assigned tasks. Amanda is always helping out wherever needed.

Jim Kinsella, Supervisor, Engineering, Melrose-Wakefield Hospital

Recently, on the way to work an employee’s truck ran out of fuel in the parking lot. This created, not only a problem for the employee, but also a safety hazard in the garage. In the tight quarters of the garage other driver’s were having a difficult time maneuvering around the employee’s vehicle. Jim went over to the employee and asked what the problem was. The employee explained to him that his vehicle was out fo fuel, that he had a fuel can, which, however was missing the nozzle. Because fo this the employee could not get the fuel out of the can and into his vehicle. Jim left the garage and went to get a nozzle from maintenance.

Unfortunately the nozzle did not work with the employees fuel can. When Jim realized this, he again went out of his way and found him a fuel can from maintenance. This time the can worked properly and the employee was able to get fuel into his vehicle. Jim deserves to be recognized for going out of his way to help this employee and correct a dangerous situation in the garage. Also, there were some other people on-hand who were helping direct traffic who also did an excellent job so a big shout out goes to them as well.
