Hallmark Health dietitian receives oncology certification

Dec. 21, 2011 – Hallmark Health System, which includes Lawrence Memorial Hospital of Medford and Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, is pleased to announce that Sara Henry, RD, LDN recently passed the exam to become a Certified Specialist in Oncology Nutrition. She is one of a small group of dietitians in the state to earn this credential.

Henry, who has worked at Hallmark Health since 2009, splits her time between several of the organization’s locations including the Hallmark Health Hematology and Oncology Center in Stoneham. There she works with oncology patients on the importance of adequate calories and protein to minimize weight loss during treatment and establish different strategies to overcome the side effects of chemotherapy (nausea, vomiting and weight loss). Henry also rounds on patients while they are receiving their infusions and also works with the Center’s social worker to run support groups for patients.

The Oncology Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group (ON DPG), a professional practice group within the American Dietetic Association, has worked with the Commission on Dietetic Registration to create a Board Certification credential for Registered Dietitians in Oncology Nutrition. ON DPG envisions that the Board Certification in Oncology Nutrition credential will provide potential employers, oncology patients and caregivers with a tool to evaluate the expertise of the dietetics professional providing oncology nutrition services.

The Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) offers Board Certification as a Specialist in Oncology Nutrition. Board certification is granted in recognition of an applicant's documented practice experience and successful completion of an examination in the specialty area.
