In the last five years, Melrose emergency room doctor Steven Sbardella said he’s seen two trends in the type of patients who are treated for alcohol poisoning at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital: they’re significantly younger, and they’re willing to take greater risks with their health.
“It used to be where we would see people who are in their 30s and 40s coming in who were intoxicated,” Sbardella said last week, “and now we’re seeing people who are 15, 16, 17, and that’s happening more frequently. The numbers aren’t outrageous yet, but there’s evidence that it’s more frequent.”
