Joan M. Vitello, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, FAHA, CNAA Joan Vitello has over 25 years in hospital organizations as a staff nurse, unit instructor, critical care clinical nurse specialist, nurse manager, nursing director, VP of Patient Care Services and currently, as a the System VP/Chief Nursing Officer for Hallmark Health System in Melrose, MA. Her clinical and management experience has been in critical care, emergency, post-anesthesia, psychiatric and outpatient services in chiefly academic medical center settings and for the past 6 years in community settings. During her more than 25 years in health care, Joan has championed the value of collaboration and the need to build linkages with other disciplines outside nursing to ensure the overall excellence of service delivery.

She has combined her clinical expertise with a formal educational background in organizational development. As a result of this, Joan is also recognized as an organizational consultant. She has consulted with the Boston Public Schools system in regards to curriculum development of their health careers academy. In addition, Joan has served as a consultant to 3M Healthcare, Hewlett-Packard, Kontron Cardiovascular Inc., Wilkes Barre General Hospital, Georgetown University, Mount Sinai Hospital, Maine Medical Center, and hospitals in England, India, China and Israel, among others.

Joan has had extensive experience as a clinical researcher and, for ten years, as an editor of the Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing. She has presented papers around the world on topics ranging from leadership, emotional intelligence and organizational change to cardiovascular, emergency and nursing issues. Her extensive publications have appeared in Focus on Critical Care, Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing, Critical Care Quarterly, Heart & Lung, as well as numerous other publications. She has been on the faculty at Regis College in the School of Nursing in Weston, MA and Bentley College in the School of Management, Waltham, MA.

Joan has served as the 25th President of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, the world's largest nursing specialty organization of approximately 78,000 members during the 1994/95 year. She has also served on the Board of Directors for Emergency International and as Secretary for the Foundation for Caring for Families of Critically Ill Patients. Joan was inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in 1994, and as a Fellow of the American Heart Association Council on Cardiovascular Nursing in 1992. She is also certified as an Advanced Nursing Administrator by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Joan was awarded her MSN from the University of Alabama in Birmingham in Cardiovascular/Critical Care. She received her Ph.D. in Human and Organizational Systems from The Fielding Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, California. Her dissertation research explored the leadership practices and emotional intelligence of nursing leaders.

Affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital for leading-edge cardiac care and Tufts-New England Medical Center for excellence in neonatalogy.
