A Breath of Fresh Air

Are you exhausted, short of breath, depressed, or feel it’s not worth the effort to do things? Do you suffer from emphysema, chronic bronchitis or asthma? You may benefit from pulmonary rehabilitation.

What is pulmonary rehabilitation?

  • A medically sound, supervised exercise program for individuals with lung disease
  • Education in nutrition, control of weight, stress management, risk factors, medications, and breathing and pacing techniques
  • Treatment over a predictable length of time with measurable results
  • The fellowship of a small group of members with a similar illness who are working to improve their health, in a relaxed and enjoyable environment
  • A road back to daily life and activities after a hospitalization or gradual decline

When you join the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, your care plan may consist of 18 to 24 visits for conditioning. Taking into account the best times of the day for pulmonary patients, we offer two morning sessions and two afternoon sessions from which to choose.

Education
A series of education sessions are held during the class. These include information on:

  • stress management
  • how your lungs work
  • medications
  • exercise
  • benefits of smoking cessation
  • nutrition and breathing
  • pacing techniques

Exercise
Supervised exercise groups have a maximum of ten patients who are carefully supervised by a physical therapist, rehabilitation nurse and exercise physiologist at the Charles J.Hoff Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehabilitation Unit.

The unit is equipped with stationary bicycles, treadmills, rowers, an arm ergometer, hand weights and arm/leg bikes. Oxygen saturation, pulse and blood pressures are monitored during exercise. You must attend two 75 minute sessions each week, continuing for 18-24 sessions, depending on number of visits approved by your insurance. The exercise sessions are on Tuesday and Thursday.

Medical insurance
To join the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program, your primary care physician must refer you. Patients who have had treatment or surgery at another hospital may also participate in the program. Health insurance coverage varies significantly among insurance companies. Some insurers require prior approval before enrolling in the program. For more information regarding coverage, please call your health insurance company prior to your first visit.
