Centers for Disease Control and Prevention H1N1 (Swine Flu)
Hallmark Health System, which includes Lawrence Memorial Hospital of Medford and Melrose Wakefield Hospital, plans and trains extensively for large-scale disasters and public health emergencies, including infectious disease outbreaks.
In preparation for a local swine flu outbreak, we are participating in regular conference calls with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Medical, nursing, infectious disease, emergency preparedness and administrative leaders at Hallmark Health have been meeting to review plans for dealing with this problem in our region.
We are well prepared to deal with an outbreak of swine flu; we have access to antiviral medications for treatment of individuals who are sick, along with other medical supplies and equipment.
We have placed large posters at hospital entrances that request patients and visitors to alert hospital staff if they have flu symptoms. If no symptoms are present, they are reminded to cover their mouth and nose when they cough or sneeze and wash their hands with soap and warm water, which are important ways to prevent the spread of germs.
For information on the swine flu, visit the website of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
