The Robert Dutton, MD, Adult Day Health Center is committed to enriching the lives of participants by providing quality clinical and social services in a safe, supportive and stimulating environment. 

The Center, established in 1978, focuses on both the social and medical needs of participants. The Center’s staff promotes hope and support to the aging and disabled and, at the same time, strive to encourage wellness, independence and dignity for participants.

The multidisciplinary team is experienced in adult day health, and many have worked together at the Center for more than 15 years. This continuity provides participants with a unique homogenous and participatory approach to care. The participant, caregiver, family member and health care provider are all included in care planning.

Education and Information

All of the Center’s services are designed for disabled or older adults living in the community, with home-based support and health services to assist them. The services also provide respite care for busy families during the day. Participants return home safely in the evening.

Adult day health care is offered for any elder or disabled adult with medical, cognitive, or emotional conditions that require monitoring and treatment in a structured setting.

Hours of operation
Services are offered Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Schedules and transportation arrangements are decided on an individual basis. Some participants join us every day, while others come a few times per week. We will help you develop a schedule based on the needs and resources of your family.

Financial information
The Center’s services have been developed to help individuals and their families get the most value for their health care dollars. Self-pay participants and those eligible for Medicaid or State Home Care reimbursement are accepted at the Dutton Center. Transportation is provided for a separate fee.

Our location
The Dutton Adult Day Health Center is located at 1117 Main Street in Wakefield, MA. The site is easily accessible from Routes 28, 93, 128, and 1. Onsite parking is available.


 Our Program

The Robert Dutton, MD, Adult Day Health Center provides a multidisciplinary approach and a highly structured milieu for participants whose needs are socialization, structure and support; medical monitoring and treatment; specialized programming for memory impairment; and psychiatric/mental health supports.

The Center’s staff works closely with local agencies and other service providers to offer a variety of quality enrichment programs. Registered nurses, rehabilitation therapists, occupational therapists, podiatrists, nutritionists, and other professionals provide many of the clinical services at the Center. Additional professional services are provided as needed.

The Center promotes a home-like atmosphere, offering a bright, clean, and cheery environment. Among the center’s amenities are a homey kitchen and eating area, four bathrooms, including one with a handicapped accessible shower; and a laundry room. There is a well-appointed lounge area for socializing and relaxing and a separate treatment room, which allows for maximum privacy. Activity areas are also available to provide a quiet space for groups or individual projects. The Center is fully handicapped accessible.

In addition to the aforementioned services, computer activities, WII Fitness, field trips, health education programs, and a variety of other programs are offered to stimulate the mind and provide restorative therapy for the body.



For caregivers

The Center’s programs provide needed respite care and added support and care management of a family’s loved one by a highly-qualified and experienced team. Services can also delay or prevent the need for placement in a long-term care facility, reduction in hospital/emergency department visits, and cost-effective and convenient health care.

Each month, a Caregivers Support Group is offered at the Center on the third Wednesday. Participants families and other residents of the community are welcome to attend. Please register 24 hours in advance by calling 781-246-2820 or if you need more information.

For participants

Our comprehensive programs and services help reduce stresses and fears and help improve a participant’s physical stamina. Participants renew interests, express having more vitality, and develop a renewed sense of purpose. The center’s programming also help participants improve mental functioning, continue independence in the community, improve their nutritional status, allow for re-socialization, and assist them in developing new friendships.

Diverse activities such as computer and video games, WII Fitness, gardening, pet therapy, and restorative exercise are offered daily. A hot lunch and morning and afternoon snacks are provided without charge. The menus meet the American Dietetic Association standards for older adults.

Medical Conditions

The medical component is for clients who require medical monitoring, therapy services at a maintenance level, and moderate to maximum assistance with activities of daily living.

Cognitive impairments

The dementia component of the program is designed to meet the needs of participants suffering from some degree of memory loss, confusion, and disorientation or impaired judgment, who need a supervised, structured, and caring environment that compensates for cognitive, physical, and social deficits. The goal of this component is to promote maximum cognitive physical and psychological functioning in an effort to assists participants to maintain dignity, self-respect, and independence.

Psychiatric disorders

The psychiatric component is designed to meet the needs of older adults with major mental illness who need a transition program or a period of consolidation and support as they return to the community. The program offers multidisciplinary support and collaboration with community care providers. Our experience has shown that older adults can make significant gains in this structured program in the maintenance of emotional stability and prevention of further hospitalizations.

Additional Information

The Center is licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and aligned with Mass Health and the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Services regulations. A Participant Family Advisory Council (PFAC) helps to inform the work at the center.
