"Hallmark Health Improves on
Colonoscopy Screenings, Prep

This Wicked Local/Melrose article explains Hallmark Health's commitment to making patients comfortable with the procedure and personalizing the prep.

Colon cancer can affect anyone. It is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S., however, it is also one of the most preventable and treatable forms of the disease if caught early.  A colonoscopy screening is one of the few screening methods that can effectively identify and eliminate pre-cancer. But here's the thing -- you have to get screened!

Colon cancer is a cancer of the large intestine.  It affects men and women and all races and ethnicities. Unlike most cancers, colon cancer can actually be effectively prevented by getting screened with colonoscopy.  During a colonoscopy providers can remove precancerous growths called polyps thereby preventing them from growing into cancer.  One third to one-half of the population getting screened has some form of these polyps.  And even if cancer is not prevented, as long as colon cancer is found early, it can be easily treated and is associated with excellent outcomes.

In fact, one of the reasons that colon cancer is still so common is that one-in-three adults have not undergone an age-appropriate screening.

No one really likes the idea of a colonoscopy. They worry about the prep, or that it might be uncomfortable, or worry about what the screening might find.  It could be something as simple as not being able to get a ride to or from the screening.

At Melrose-Wakefield Hospital and Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford, we are committed to preventing colon cancer and are committed to making getting screened as easy as possible.

  • •  If you’re worried about the prep, we can customize it for you.
  • •  Because we’re in a hospital setting, we have anesthesia options to make you comfortable during the test.
  • •  Our patient navigators are here to help coordinate your care and answer your questions.
  • •  You won’t have to wait weeks for the results. We’ll get you your screening results usually within two business days.

Whatever your concern, we’re here to help and make getting a colonoscopy screening stress free, because our goal is to wipe out this preventable cancer for our patients.
