What is the difference between a screening mammogram and a diagnostic mammogram?

A screening mammogram is done once a year to check for a breast abnormality in women who do not have any signs or symptoms of breast disease.

A diagnostic mammogram is done when additional views are requested by a radiologist from a screening mammogram, or in symptomatic patients with pain, lump or nipple discharge. All diagnostic mammograms are completed at our Breast Health Center in Stoneham.
