IPV is a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship where one partner tries to maintain power and control over another intimate partner. Sexual assault is any type of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient. IPV and sexual assault can happen to anyone and affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels. IPV and SA can occur, both in a relationship or outside of the context of a relationship. IPV and SA affect not only those who are abused, but also has a substantial effect on children, family members, friends, co-workers, other witnesses and the community at large.
